Artisans and tradesmen in Syria are crying out for regulation. Under the present regime, many have been allowed to operate without the necessary skill or qualifications. Low quality goods and services have lead to a sharp decline in public confidence in artisans and tradesmen.
In addition, hundreds have died or have been maimed by poor health and safety in the workplace. Child labour is still a real problem, which often goes unnoticed under the guise of apprenticeship.
The Movement for Justice and Development proposes the reintroduction of the guilds system for artisans, and a stringent qualification scheme for tradesmen. Children will not be allowed to work, and the state, in collaboration with business and the local community, shall establish better post-secondary school vocational colleges to meet the rising demands for skilled artisans and tradesmen while maintaining standards. |
