For far too long Syria has been at the mercy of governments that have never been democratically elected. Since the Ba'th Party military coup of March 1963 there has not been a single government that has enjoyed a popular mandate.
The current Ba'th regime is indicative of an outdated political culture which regards politics as the realm of oligarchic elite which must impose guardianship over the people. Elections are rigged, the media is censured, the courts emasculated. Legitimacy is non-existent.
We believe that it is only by accurately representing the wishes of the majority of the population that equilibrium and stability can be restored to Syria. Our aim is to put in place a fair and democratic system which will ensure wise, durable and representative governance for future generations.
The Movement for Justice and Development is committed to root and branch reform of Syria's political system. We promise to introduce a new constitution which enshrines pluralistic principles and civil and human rights. We promise to build a solid democratic state based on institutions congruent with Syrian society, which can withstand shocks and adapt to change.
We are committed to real and effective change that will lead Syria into a new direction, to put an end to the culture of oligarchy, sectarianism, corruption and all the other ills which have afflicted our country.
Our core goal is to develop representative government on all levels. To do so, we will push forward with projects and initiatives that will push for comprehensive reform of the current system. Nothing short of real and decisive change will do.
